Being a moving company you would expect us to tell you over and over to hire professional movers in Utah. After reading through other blogs on the same topic I found an underlying bias towards using professional help. That is not the purpose of this blog. The purpose is to help you make a well-informed decision. I will make a case for both sides. Both are great options.

Make your decision ASAP. Before I get into the bulk of this blog, I’d like to offer a word of caution: make this decision as soon as possible! The longer you wait the higher the stress levels you will experience. The earlier you decide to use a moving company, the more likely you will be able to secure your preferred move date. It is hard for a company to accommodate to your time constraints when they have little time in advance to schedule your move.

The case for DIY moving. You can definitely save money if you do the move yourself; there is no question about it. There wouldn’t be $16 billion industry for moving services if there wasn’t money to be made. Doing it yourself can give you the freedom of moving when you want and how fast or slow you want to move. Often if you don’t have a lot of stuff to move you can borrow or rent a trailer or truck to save money. You can find people who want to help move you by posting on Craigslist or KSL Classifieds and asking for help. Neighbors and family are also great to use for muscles. They feel good because they have performed a service and you are happy that you didn’t need to spend money to hire a moving company.

Cons of DIY moving. Unfortunately, there is no way to insure your belongings when you use help from Craigslist, KSL, neighbors, or family members. If they brake an item there are no guarantees they will fix it. Also DIY moving takes a lot of planning and hours spent orchestrating the move. It adds to the already stressful event of moving. Moving yourself is very time consuming and can add a few gray hairs to your head. It takes a lot of preparation before the “move day” and a lot of time after.

The case for hiring movers. Movers make life so much easier. If money is not a concern, then hiring movers is the best decision. They can come pack everything as well as wrap all of your precious furniture with soft (not like cuddly soft) blankets to make sure they are protected. A big advantage of using movers is that they disassemble large furniture and take care of all of the heavy lifting. They are quick and efficient. If you are going to hire, make sure they have insurance. No matter how careful you are, things can get broken in the moving process whether it’s while the furniture is in transit in the truck, while the furniture is being disassembled, or while the furniture is being carried. Having your belongings insured lowers your stress level because you know that your possessions are protected. There are many details that go into moving that you often don’t think about until the day of the move. The movers come prepare and are happy to help with any details you have forgotten.

Cons of hiring movers. There are none. Everybody will tell you to hire movers, I’m kidding. For OCD people who want to make sure everything is done their way, hiring is not the right choice. No mover wants to be micromanaged on how lift a couch or bed frame. Hiring movers can be expensive and bottlenecks can occur. These occur if you have not planned out where you want the movers to put your belongings in the new house. Movers can spend extra time on tasks that you may find aren’t necessary, such as carefully wrapping every item in the house with stretch wrap and blankets. Be sure to let them know what you do and don’t want wrapped.

In conclusion, it is up to you to decide what you want do and which option is the best fit. I hope this blog hasn’t been too bias and is helpful in your decision-making process. I made an effort to highlight key advantages and disadvantages when it comes to either DIY or hiring moving a company. Good luck on your move. They can be stressful, but with the right planning and early decision making they can go smoother than expected!
