Preparing Your Garage or Workshop for a Move

The garage is where most American Fork moves lose their schedule. Every other room has been packed for a week, the house looks ready, and then the crew opens the garage door and finds half-full paint cans, a gas can behind the mower, three decades of hardware in coffee tins, and a table saw nobody has measured.

We are Best of Utah Moving & Storage, and we have moved garages and home workshops across Utah County since 2013. Our residential movers serving Utah County handle this room on thousands of jobs a year, and the pattern repeats often enough to be predictable. Start on the garage four weeks out, and it stops being the thing that adds two hours to your day.

Why Garages Take Longer Than Any Other Room

Nothing in a garage is uniform. A bedroom is clothing and furniture in known shapes, packed in known ways. A garage is a chemistry cabinet, a tool library, a sports locker, and a storage unit sharing the same four walls, and every category needs a different decision before anything can go in a box.

There is also a sorting question nobody has answered yet. Most rooms in a house were decluttered at some point. Garages rarely were.

A crew cannot pack an item while you stand beside it deciding whether it is coming with you, so on an hourly job that hesitation is billable, and on a guaranteed estimate it still costs you daylight. The work worth doing early is deciding, not packing.

What We Cannot Load, and What to Do With It

Federal rules keep certain items off a moving truck entirely, and most of them live in the garage. This is not a company preference, and it is not negotiable. Any mover who offers to load a propane tank is telling you how they run the rest of the job. The full federal list sits alongside the rest of the consumer guidance at fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move.

The common refusals:

Utah County runs household hazardous waste collection that covers most of this, and disposal is free for residents. Drain fuel from mowers, trimmers, and generators two weeks ahead so the tanks have time to run dry on their own. Our full list of items movers cannot transport covers the rest of the house as well.

How to Handle Tools, Hardware, and Loose Parts

Hand tools travel well in their own chests, provided the drawers are taped shut, and the chest is light enough to move while loaded. Anything over roughly 50 pounds should be emptied first. A rolling tool cabinet packed full is both a back injury and a gouged floor waiting for the first staircase or threshold it meets.

Loose hardware is what gets lost. Screws, bits, blades, and fasteners scattered across jars and coffee cans arrive as one mixed pile unless they are contained beforehand.

Seal the jars, box them together, and label that box for the workshop rather than the garage, since the two rooms often end up in different places at the new house. Sharp edges on chisels, saw blades, and planes get sheathed in cardboard and taped before anything goes in a carton.

Garage full of equipment you would rather not wrestle?

Tell us what is in there when you request your quote. We will build the crew and the equipment list around it and put the price in writing.

Moving Large Equipment Safely

Table saws, drill presses, welders, air compressors, and workbenches are specialty items rather than furniture. The weight sits in awkward distributions, they often bolt to a stand or to the floor, and the motor is usually the most fragile part of an otherwise indestructible machine. Treating one like a dresser is how it arrives out of alignment.

Photograph the setup before anything comes apart, then bag and label every fastener to the machine it came off. Bolt-down equipment needs freeing before the crew arrives, or the day stops while somebody hunts for a wrench.

Treadmills, home gyms, and gun safes sit in the same category, and all of them change crew sizing. Our guide to moving specialty hobby equipment covers the pieces that need planning rather than muscle.

Clearing Access for Loading Day

The garage is usually where a truck parks closest, which makes it the natural staging area for the whole move. If it is still full on the morning of, that advantage disappears and every carton in the house routes through the front door instead, adding distance to every single trip the crew makes.

Clear a lane from the back wall to the driveway. Stack packed boxes against one side rather than down the middle. Move vehicles out the night before, not while the crew stands waiting.

If your driveway is steep or narrow, which is common on the east bench, tell us in advance so we size the truck correctly rather than discovering the problem with a 26-footer halfway up it. More on this in our walkthrough on preparing your home before movers arrive.

Start four weeks out, and the garage becomes the easiest room on the list.
