Do Moving Companies Provide Packing Materials?

Yes. A full-service moving company brings the boxes, paper, tape, and protective wrap used on your job, and the cost is included in the written estimate rather than on a separate receipt from a hardware store.

We are Best of Utah Moving & Storage, and we have run packing work out of our American Fork office since 2013. Across more than 10,000 completed moves, our crews have shown up carrying their own supplies every time.

What changes between companies is how much they carry, what they refuse to handle, and whether you learn about either before the truck is loaded. A labor-only crew loading a rental truck you hired is not bringing boxes. A packing service is.

Our residential moving in American Fork quotes materials inside the guaranteed price, so the number you approve covers supplies alongside labor, with nothing added on the day.

What Packing Materials a Crew Brings to the Job

The standard kit covers far more than boxes. Small, medium, and large cartons handle general contents, dish barrels take kitchen glassware, and wardrobe boxes let hanging clothes travel on the rail instead of folded into a bag.

Alongside those come packing paper, bubble wrap, stretch wrap, tape, furniture pads, mattress bags, and corner protectors for framed pieces. A crew arriving without all of that is a crew planning to improvise.

Grade matters as much as quantity. A grocery store box is built to hold produce for one trip, not to sit under 300 pounds of other cartons in a loaded truck.

Our crews carry double-walled boxes for anything heavy or fragile, plus floor runners and door jamb protection for the house itself. Those last two are easy to overlook until a loaded dolly meets a baseboard on the way out the front door.

What Full Packing Covers and Where Partial Packing Stops

Full packing means the crew works room by room through the whole house. Everything gets wrapped, boxed, and labeled with the room it belongs to at the new address, which is what makes unloading go quickly at the other end.

Materials, labor, and labeling sit inside one price, and the inventory gets built as the work happens rather than reconstructed from memory afterward.

Partial packing is the option most people want once they hear it exists. You handle the straightforward rooms on your own schedule, and the crew takes the kitchen, the artwork, the electronics, and anything else where a mistake is expensive.

Our breakdown of what our packing service covers walks through how the two versions differ on a real job. Either way, the materials come from us, so you are not buying tape at 9 pm the night before.

Which Items a Crew Cannot Pack or Supply

Some things stay off the truck no matter which service you book, and the restrictions are federal rather than company preference. Any mover offering to load a propane tank is telling you something about how they run the rest of the job.

Federal guidance on this, along with the rest of what to check before you hire anyone, is published by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration at fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move.

The usual refusals:

The last two sit on the list for a different reason. Nothing stops us from carrying them, but they belong in a bag that rides in your own car where you can see them. Our list of items movers cannot transport covers the full set, including the ones people are most surprised by, and explains what to do with each before the crew arrives.

How Materials Affect What You Pay

On a guaranteed written estimate, materials are priced into the total when the quote is built. There is no restocking charge at the end and no box count that climbs once the crew is already working.

The figure you approve is the figure on the invoice, and that has been the rule here since 2013. An hourly job carries the same materials, counted the same way, with the same absence of surprises.

Buying your own supplies is not automatically cheaper either. Most people underestimate box counts by a wide margin, overbuy tape, make two more trips than planned, and still finish the night before with three rooms untouched.

Our comparison of professional packing against doing it yourself puts the real numbers side by side, including the hours involved and where the DIY route tends to break down.

What to Do Before the Packing Crew Arrives

Set aside anything you intend to carry yourself before the crew walks in. Medication, documents, chargers, a change of clothes, and whatever the children need that night should be out of the house or separated into one room with the door shut.

Once packing starts, everything within reach goes into a carton, and nobody wants to open 40 boxes hunting for a phone charger at 11 pm.

Tell us about specialty pieces when you book rather than on the day. Pianos, gun safes, aquariums, and oversized workshop equipment change the crew size and the equipment list. A piece flagged at quote time is a planned item.

The same piece discovered at 8 am is a delay that pushes everything behind it. Clear pathways between rooms help more than most people expect, since the crew will be carrying full cartons through them for hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you bring the boxes, or do we need to buy them first?

We bring them. Boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, stretch wrap, tape, and padding all arrive with the crew, and the cost is included in the written estimate. You do not need to source anything in advance unless you have decided to pack certain rooms yourself before we arrive.

Yes, and it is a common arrangement. Partial packing lets you work through bedrooms and closets on your own time while our crew takes the kitchen, fragile items, electronics, and specialty pieces. Tell us which rooms you want covered when you request the quote so we bring the right volume of materials.

Hazardous materials, including paint, propane, gasoline, and aerosols. Perishable food. Live plants on interstate jobs. We also recommend you keep medication, documents, jewelry, and anything irreplaceable with you rather than on the truck, even though those are not restricted items.

Two to four weeks covers most local jobs. Summer dates, long-distance moves, and anything landing on a weekend or at month-end fill earlier, so six to eight weeks is safer in those cases. Packing adds a day to the schedule on larger homes, which is worth accounting for when you pick a date.
